The developers of XRP Ledger Labs, a software studio that handles XRPL-based digital payments solutions, demonstrated the concept of their offline tool for XRP transactions based on QR codes.
No internet needed for XRPL conversions
According to a presentation given by XRPL Labs at the Apex Developer Summit in Tallinn, its team has created a viable prototype of the system that allows users to initiate XRP transfers offline.

XRP Ledger’s Proof of Payment Protocol (xPoP) can be used by a variety of offline devices 24/7. For example, it is compatible with vending machines and public transportation.
A device with built-in xPoP issues a QR code on its screen or on paper, while the owner of XRPL-based assets can repay them in an instant decentralized manner.
Representatives of XRPL Labs are sure that this innovation can give a proper spin to the flywheel based on XRPL certification for retail:
With XRPL Labs aiming to solve the “chicken/egg problem”, we started with a 100% focus on end users and the ecosystem. We feel it’s time to start focusing on retail as well. xPoP is a beneficial development for future retail adoption, and therefore: for the entire ecosystem.

XRPL Labs added that the xPoP intellectual property belongs to the XRP Ledger Foundation, a non-profit organization that coordinates community initiatives from the XRP community.
Thus, the source code for the new tool will be published once its “public beta” version is ready for open testing.
To counteract massive retail adoption, XRPL developers will release “Lite Accounts,” a specific type of XRPL address that can be activated with just 1 XRP.
