Next-generation blockchain pioneer of live broadcasting Theta Laboratories The Theta Video API has released a new product for developers that allows them to add decentralized video to any website or application without any central servers, content delivery or video hosting software.
This move will provide an easy-to-use API for anyone and will provide users with a revolutionary way to stream video content decently with just a few lines of code.
Powered by native Theta TFUEL codeUsers will be able to simply upload a video and Theta Video API will return a playable link that they can add a Theta-enabled player to a site displaying the video.
Ease of use now means that anyone will be able to roll out decentralized video to handle delivery and play their videos.
Users who then watch will be able to transmit the video over Theta network on a peer-to-peer basis, taking full advantage of Theta’s decentralized infrastructure. This is not just about embedding an existing video stream – any user can use Theta Video API to upload any video on their website with just a few clicks in a process without permission.
How does theta help
It’s easy for developers to use: Web or mobile developer publishes a video file on Theta Video API to ingest the endpoint and get a playable video URL in return with a few lines of JavaScript code that enables Theta decentralized library for streaming delivery.
Mitch Liu, CEO of Theta Labs, said the move was an evolutionary next step in what decentralized protocols could bring to Web 3.0, proving their superiority over the legacy centralized services of the first Web.
“Theta’s vision is to bring the principles of Web 3.0 to video streaming so that anyone can stream video over a decentralized network with no permissions, no interference, and no central entity collecting and selling your data,” Liu said.
He added, “We envision this service becoming a building block for Web3, by allowing users to add video and other content to any site or application without contracts with central entities such as AWS or Akamai.”
Goals and objectives
Theta aims to significantly reduce the cost of starting a new video platform, removing barriers to entry and allowing new content types and creators to thrive.
By using Theta Network to bypass costly contracts with tech giants, the playing field for small and medium-sized sites will be leveled to compete with the largest. In fact, you can build an entire video platform using only Theta Video API without needing, rendering or running any other video encoder since Theta Video API creates an end-to-end decentralized video pipeline – all in one, easy to use, fully decentralized.
The alpha Theta Video API version will support video-on-demand rendering and delivery, with support for live streaming to continue afterwards.
This initial release features a p2p video delivery infrastructure that can significantly reduce CDN bandwidth costs without affecting video playback quality. In addition, the decentralized video ingestion infrastructure is tested with alpha version in a sandbox environment.
After further testing, this functionality will be integrated into Theta’s Elite Edge Nodes which enable these global 8000+ nodes to perform commercial video encoding functions with high reliability and uptime, gaining TFUEL in exchange for the computational power it provides.
As a final step, the release of decentralized storage support on Elite Edge Nodes in 2022 will support the storage of source video files and VoD content that complements the extensive video pipeline.
This effectively presents Theta’s Web 3.0 vision where anyone can stream video over a decentralized network with no permissions, no interference, and no centralized entities.
