Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said cryptocurrency is a “key priority” for him as he tries to build his city into the crypto capital of the world. “I want to distinguish ourselves as the crypto capital of the United States or the world,” he said.
‘Main Priority’ – Miami aims to become the crypto capital of the world
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez spoke about bitcoin and cryptocurrency in an interview with Bloomberg, published on Tuesday. The mayor has been lobbying lawmakers to allow government employees to pay their salaries in bitcoin as well as allow taxes to be paid in crypto and for the city to invest a portion of the money in BTC. He was asked how many crypto initiatives are priority to him.
Mayor Suarez replied:
It is a major priority for me because I want to distinguish ourselves as the crypto capital of the United States or the world.
“We’ve already done three things,” he said. “One is that we will be asking for a proposal in October to allow our employees to get paid in bitcoin, allow our residents to pay fees in bitcoin, and even taxes on bitcoin if the county allows it.”
Regarding the mandate to allow the city to keep bitcoin on its balance sheet, he said, “Of course, if we could hold it the moment I put the decision on our agenda, it would go up 30% or 40%, so it would have looked like a genius at the time. But that’s how it works.”
The pro-Bitcoin mayor also defended BTC in an interview with Fox Business Tuesday. He was asked to comment on whether bitcoin is worthless, as JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said. “Personally, I think bitcoin is worthless,” the head of the global investment bank said Monday.
“It is certainly not worthless,” Suarez replied, noting that the price of Bitcoin is currently around $55,000.
