Artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, have become the latest way for “bad actors” to distribute malware, scams and spam – research from Meta’s security team warns.
May 1 research report The security team at Meta, Facebook’s parent company, in March discovered 10 malware families posing as ChatGPT and similar AI tools, some of which were found in various browser extensions, noting:
“Since March alone, our security analysts have found approximately 10 malware families posing as ChatGPT and similar tools to compromise accounts on the Internet.”
Meta explained that these “bad actors” – malware operators, scammers, spammers and the like – have switched to AI because it’s the “last wave” of what captures “the imagination and the imagination.” ‘excitement of people’.
The research is part of a major interest in artificial intelligence, with ChatGPT, in particular, getting a lot of attention for AI.
“For example, we have seen threat actors create malicious browser extensions available on official online stores that claim to offer ChatGPT-related tools,” he added.
Meta security said some of these “malicious extensions” include operations with ChatGPT functionality that co-exist with the malware.

The company’s security team went on to explain that bad actors tend to move to where the latest craze is, referring to the hype around digital currency and the scams that come with it:
“It’s not unique to the generative AI space. As an industry, we’ve seen this through other popular topics in their time, such as crypto scams fueled by interest in digital currency.
“The generative AI space is changing rapidly and bad actors know it,” they added, emphasizing the need to be “vigilant.”
Guy Rosen, Meta’s chief security officer, went even further in a recent interview with Reuters stating that “ChatGPT is the new crypto” for these bad actors.

It should be noted, however, that Meta is now making its own developments in generative AI.

Despite being heavily invested in the Metaverse, AI is now Meta’s biggest investment, according to chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.
