Beware of the scam: No, the Fantom Foundation does not plan to reward those affected by the Multichain saga with FTM tokens
As the cryptocurrency segment recovers from another nine-digit hack of the bridge infrastructure, evildoers are already trying to scam its victims for the second time. Although Elon Musk allegedly cracked down on Twitter bots, they managed to activate thousands of accounts to promote the scams.
Don’t try to claim an “emergency” FTM airdrop
Since yesterday, July 7, 2023, a fake “emergency distribution” campaign has made its way onto crypto Twitter. The perpetrators pose as representatives of the Fantom Foundation, a non-profit organization behind Fantom (FTM), a high-performance blockchain protocol.
The crooks claim to issue FTM reservations to the victims affected by the recent hack of the multi-chain bridge infrastructure. Yesterday, due to malicious activity, the protocol asked all users of its Fantom-based mechanisms to remove all assets and revoke approvals.
The account created by the scammers is designed to imitate the legitimate Fantom Foundation Twitter page. Its promotion is aggressively supported by Twitter bots.
In the last hours of this campaign, the ad with a fake cashback program invitation and phishing link was retweeted more than 6,000 times.
The Most Suspicious Crypto Hack of 2023
On top of that, the ad has been viewed over 43,000 times and has even been bookmarked by some users. Every post in the account is supported by bots with top NFTs as avatars.
Yesterday, “summary activity” was noticed on the Fantom-based element of the multi-chain bridge infrastructure. The crooks managed to withdraw over $102 million in assets.
Multichain has already been hacked several times: after the last attack attempt, the team admitted that its CEO was missing and that no one could access the servers of the infrastructure.
