Several crypto stakeholders have described Senator Elizabeth Warren’s latest tweet about Bitcoin (BTC) mining activity as “misinformation.”
The Democratic senator agreed with a New York Times report that Bitcoin mining was increasing Americans’ energy bills and causing as much pollution as 3.5 million cars.
Warren said she has repeatedly called attention to “the risks Bitcoin poses to our power grids and our climate.” She urged authorities to “require cryptominers to disclose their energy consumption and emissions.”
Several crypto experts have previously criticized the report cited by Warren. They described it as a hit coin that manipulated data to prove Bitcoin mining was wrong.
Crypto Community Reaction
The lawmaker’s statement drew strong reactions from the crypto community, which vehemently denied his claims.
MicroStrategy President Michael Saylor told the senator that Bitcoin miners do not create pollution or increase energy bills. Saylor added:
“These are data centers running on excess electricity that would otherwise be wasted, and play the vital role of powering the most secure computing network in the world.”
Climate activist Daniel Batten underline that “electricity price increases in Texas are consistent with increases across the United States during this period. Nothing to do with Bitcoin mining.
Bitcoin lawyer Jane Adams replied that Bitcoin mining has zero carbon emissions and reduces pollution by “using stranded assets and bolsters energy grids across the United States”
Meanwhile, others weren’t so civil in their response accusing the senator of spreading misinformation. Several others tagged Elon Musk to deal with misinformation on the platform.
Warren’s anti-crypto stance
Senator Warren has a long history of being an anti-crypto stance. The senator has never missed an opportunity to criticize the industry and recently shared a plan to “build an anti-crypto army.”
Warren also described Bitcoin as an ephemeral token with no value and called for the development of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
