The Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem is heating up with space seeing a new entry from ConsenSys, an already established player in the industry. ConsenSys, the company behind MetaMask, announced the launch of its layer 2 network – Linea – on the main Ethereum blockchain this week. It will soon start integrating partners as well.
The new layer 2 scaling solution is a zkEVM cumulative network leveraging zero-knowledge proofs while making it an equivalent of the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM).
zkEVM Cumulative Network from ConsenSys – Linea
ConsenSys is the latest company to follow the growing zkEVM trend with its new Linea offering which has already had a successful testnet phase with 5.5 million unique wallets performing over 46 million transactions. According to the company, Linea has become one of the largest and fastest growing projects in Goerli.
Before hitting the ETHCC mainnet, Linea will start onboarding its launch partners starting this week.
“Linea combines the power of zero-knowledge proofs with the full equivalence of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing builders to create scalable decentralized applications (dapps) or migrate existing ones without having to modify code or rewrite smart contracts.
According to ConsenSys’ announcement, the alpha version offers faster throughput while reducing transaction fees up to 15 times less than Ethereum layer-1. The company also said the release will enable deeper integrations with its MetaMask crypto wallet.
Linea will be available to users next week once partners have had a chance to integrate their dApps and infrastructure. The company also confirmed that the network uses Ether as its native currency, which is tied directly to the Ethereum mainnet. He urged users to remain cautious in the face of fraudulent advertisements of an existing or impending Linea token sale or drop.
Popularity of zkEVM
A zkEVM is an EMV-compatible aggregate that is secured by zero-knowledge proofs. By bundling ZKPs with EVM compatibility, zkEVMs offer the security and privacy-preserving features of zk-Rollups while simultaneously improving Ethereum interoperability by protecting EVM compatibility. Such a system helps zkEVMs to be interoperable with smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) used on Ethereum.
The first zkEVM to be made publicly available was zkSync’s solution called “zkSync Era”, which went live to much fanfare in March. A few days later, Polygon announced the final mainnet for its zkEVM product and added subsequent optimizations a month later.
