The US movie theater chain – AMC Entertainment Holdings – has continued to expand its crypto-related endeavors by enabling customers to purchase digital gift cards with Dogecoin (DOGE). The service will be available on the company’s website, its mobile app, and in theaters, where people will need a BitPay wallet to make a purchase.
Dogecoin enters the movie industry
According to a recent poll conducted by AMC CEO – Adam Aaron – on Twitter – nearly 80% of respondents responded positively to the idea of the world’s largest movie theater chain to add Dogecoin as a payment method among other cryptocurrencies. Moreover, Elon Musk – one of the most prominent proponents of the meme coin – liked his tweet.

It is worth noting that the news had a positive impact on the meme coin’s price as it rose by more than 10% after the move was announced. Although it has bounced slightly since then, DOGE is still among the few coins in the green today.

AMC Theaters became the world’s largest theater chain after acquiring Odeon Cinemas, UCI Cinemas, and Carmike Cinemas in 2016. Founded in 1920, it has generated over $1 billion in revenue as of last year.
The company jumped on the cryptocurrency bandwagon in mid-August. At the time, AMC revealed that it would add Bitcoin as a payment option by the end of 2021. Thus, it joined other global brands that had previously adopted the primary cryptocurrency, such as Philip Plein, Quiznos, Sheets, and more.
Later, in September, the chair of American cinemas said that it would increase the number of cryptocurrencies accepted as payment. Specifically, these assets were Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and Litecoin (LTC).
